European Chamber welcomes China’s climate pledge ahead of the Paris climate change summit and the EU-China Joint Statement on Climate Change

Beijing, 2 July 2015 – On 30th June, 2015, China released its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) climate pledge ahead of the UN climate talks set to be held in Paris in December this year.

The European Chamber welcomes this step along with the EU-China Joint Statement on Climate Change released during the 17th EU-China Summit in Brussels on 29th June. The statement includes that the ongoing scope of EU-China cooperation on emissions trading will be expanded, in view of China's plans to establish a nationwide emissions trading system by 2020.

European Chamber President Jörg Wuttke said, “We recognise the important role that businesses can play in tackling climate change and strongly believe that China’s climate pledge will give a positive boost to EU businesses operating in China. That is why the European Chamber applied for and just received observer status at the UN climate negotiations.”

The Chair of the European Chamber’s Carbon Market Working Group, Massimiliano Varrucciu, added, “The Carbon Market Working Group appreciates the expansion of EU-China cooperation on emissions trading and views it as an opportunity to promote fairness, openness and transparency in China’s pilot emissions trading schemes currently in operation.”
