Meeting with China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS)

On 14 April, European Chamber Energy, Environment and Standards and Conformity Assessment (SCA) Working Group Chairs met online with China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS) representatives. Topics of discussion included the progress of the EU's policies and regulations under the Green Deal; key standards to address climate change, such as product carbon footprint standards; as well as the feasibility of harmonising EU-China green and low-carbon standards.

Speech at the 10th EU-China Energy Dialogue

On 31 March, the 10th EU-China Energy Dialogue took place via videoconference, hosted by EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and Administrator of the National Energy Administration Zhang Jianhua. They reviewed progress on the Joint Statement on the Implementation of the EU-China Energy Cooperation, which was signed during the 2019 EU-China Summit. Energy Working Group Chair Zhonghua Xu presented the work and views of the European Chamber.

Participation in the 2022 Working Conference on China-Europe Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation

On 4th March, the China-Europe Energy Innovation Cooperation Office (the Office) organised the 2022 Annual Working Conference. Nearly 200 participants joined online, with the European Chamber Energy Working Group representatives and member companies playing the leading role. Pan Huimin, Deputy Director General of the International Department of the National Energy Administration (NEA), and Octavian Stamate, Counsellor for Energy and Climate Action, Delegation of the European Union to China, attended the meeting and delivered opening speeches. Jiang Shihong, Vice President of the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute moderated the whole session.

Insight Sharing: EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and China’s Footstep

On 16th February, the European Chamber Finance and Taxation Working Group held a working group meeting to share insight on the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and China’s footstep in the carbon-related tax policies.

Paolo Caridi, Policy Coordinator of DG CLIMA of the European Commission, introduced the EU’s CBAM, and Cong Zhang, Partner of Ernst & Young, provided the perspective from China side taking stock of the current tax policies in the country and sharing insight on the relevant framework discussions.

Exploring Pathways to the Green Transition: The China Market and Corporate Transition

Despite the ongoing challenges of Covid-19 and the resulting economic fluctuations over the past two years, the new energy sector has continued to see staggering growth, including electric vehicles, which set new records in Chinese sales in the past year. The rapid growth of offshore wind energy and solar PV in recent years has breathed hope into global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Whether it be at COP26 or in China’s 14th FYP, one message always rings clear: the new energy sector is key to tackling climate change and reaching carbon neutrality, and its growth is only the beginning of the global shift towards sustainable practices.

Understanding the growth of renewable energy in the past gives us reason to be more optimistic about how fast it can ramp up to meet carbon neutrality goals in the future. The European Chamber of Commerce in China were delighted to invite Mr. Guozheng Zhang, Director of Investment Promotion Bureau of Qidong Economic Development Zone, Simon Lemin,
Director Industry Services Division Great China, TUV SUD, and Juan Ignacio Garcia de Motiloa, Vice Chair of Energy Working Group to present the challenges and outlook on the Green Transition in China.

China New Energy Chamber of Commerce held the 15th China New Energy International Exhibition and Forum on 16-18 January in Sui’ning, Xu’zhou City, Jiangsu Province under the theme of “Approach to Realize Neutrality: High Renewable Energy Penetration Scenarios.” During the Opening Ceremony, Zhonghua Xu, Chair of European Chamber Energy Working Group delivered a keynote speech on EU-China cooperation in the new energy field.

2021 Annual Conference of China-EU Energy Innovation Cooperation in the Field of Hydrogen Energy

Since the kick-off meeting was held in June this year, China-EU Hydrogen Energy Innovation Cooperation has achieved many accomplishments and promoted mutual cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy between China and Europe. In accordance with the annual work plan of the National Energy Administration and the China-EU Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation Office, in order to summarize and exchange the annual work experience and highlights of the cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy, and to formulate the next annual work plan, State Power Investment Group Co., Ltd., in alliance with China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., China Hydrogen Energy Alliance, and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, successfully held the 2021 Annual Working Conference of China-EU Energy Technology Innovation Cooperation in the Field of Hydrogen Energy on 6 January 2022.
