On 14th July, the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade (INTA Committee) voted overwhelmingly in favour of a proposal for an instrument to tackle foreign subsidies (INTA Committee).

On 12th July, the Council of the EU finalised the process to enable Croatia to introduce the euro in January 2023 (Council press release).

On 7th July, the Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the arrest of Cardinal Zen and the trustees of the 612 relief fund in Hong Kong (Parliament press release).

On 6th July, the Parliament voted in favour of the inclusion of gas and nuclear in the EU taxonomy. (Parliament press release).

On 5th July, the European Parliament formally adopted the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act (Parliament press release).

On 29th June, the Council of the EU adopted its negotiating position on five legislative proposals under the ‘Fit for 55’ package (Council press release).

On 19th July, European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and Vice-Premier Liu He jointly held the High Level Economic Dialogue (European and Chinese press releases).

On 19th July, BUSINESSEUROPE, a prominent European business organisation in Brussels, published a position paper on EU-China relations (BUSINESSEUROPE press release).

On 19th July, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke on the phone (Chinese press release).

On 19th July, European Parliament Vice-President Nicola Beer visited Taiwan (Taipei Times article).

On 18th July, Emmanuel Bonne, the diplomatic counselor to French President Emmanuel Macron, and Wang Yi, Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister, had a call (Chinese MFA press releases).

On 18th July, South China Morning Post (SCMP) announced that leaders from France, Germany, Spain and Italy had been invited to China to meet with President Xi Jinping in November (SCMP article). This claim was latter refuted by spokespeople of the Chinese MFA.

On 17th July, Spanish media outlet La Vanguardia published an interview with the incoming EU Ambassador to China, H.E. Jorge Toledo (La Vanguardia article).

On 17th July, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi  held a phone call (Hungarian and Chinese MFA press releases).

On 15th July, H.E. Patricia Flor presented her credentials as German Ambassador to China to Director-General of the Protocol Department of the Foreign Ministry Hong Lei (China Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) press release).

On 11th July, the Swedish National China Centre published the report Purchasing with the Party: Chinese consumer boycotts of foreign companies, 2008–2021. The report aims to present the first comprehensive overview on this topic through their compilation of 90 boycotts (Swedish National China Centre report).

On 8th July, EU Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and Chinese Vice-Premier Han Zheng met online for the third High-level Environment and Climate Dialogue (Chinese press release).

On 3rd July, EU Ambassador to China Nicolas Chapuis delivered a speech at Tsinghua’s 10th World Peace Forum (transcript of the speech).

Others

The Group of Seven (G7) Summit 2022 took place from the 26th to the 28th June. The leaders’ Communique makes several references to China in areas like security, trade and climate. During the meeting, leaders also launched the Global Infrastructure and Investment plan to develop and finance infrastructure projects (Communique).
