On April 23, the 13^th Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed the 4^th amendment to the Trademark Law of China. The new trademark law will come into effect on 1^st November, 2019. As part of the government’s effort to further strengthen the protection of intellectual property in China, the new trademark law especially targets the registration of bad faith trademark application.

While the new Trademark Law provides stronger protection to trademark owners, enterprises may need to reconsider their trademark strategies in China if they have registered certain defensive trademarks that are not for use.

The European Chamber welcomes Mr. Giovanni Pisacane, Managing Partner of GWA, to analyse these amendments and to discuss how this new regulation may affect European businesses in China.
