Data from the OECD indicates that SMEs in China contribute significantly to the country’s various economic sectors. However, SMEs face significant challenges in adopting sustainable practices and operations. In 2018, the Chinese National Environment Ministry reported penalties for environmental regulations violations as mostly incurred by SMEs.

On December 11th, 2001, China entered World Trade Organisation (WTO) and China market was opening since then.
