Fortune Magazine already advanced last year a study of IMF stating that ”based on China’s fertility rate and population growth, a recent study by two economists at the International Monetary Fund suggests that, without any changes in policy or the birth rate, China will begin to experience a labor shortage in about a decade. In fact, by 2025, the country could face a shortfall of 28 million workers.”
This contraction has been already visible, caused also by the growing dynamics of the central and west regions of China. In addition, China's rigid hukou regulations don't help labor mobility within the country. This trend is coexisting with an increasing unemployment rate especially affecting fresh graduate students which are aiming for higher salaries.
Foxconn, followed by other multinational and big local companies, has already moved toward the replacement of labor force with automation and robots. The automotive sector is the leading industry for the use of industrial robots, followed by the electronic industry. According to the International Federation of Robotics Statistical Department, in 2012 Asian markets are the biggest purchasers of robots with China being the main market, followed by Japan and Korea. China’s rate of robot per worker is still quite low compared to other Asian countries, therefore, the main industry players forecast tremendous opportunities.
How this will re-shape China's labor market? Which jobs will be replaced by machines? Which new skills will be required and how China's labor market can reply to these trends?
