As a nonprofit, federally owned enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is active in over 130 countries worldwide, implementing international cooperation projects and measures in the field of sustainable development on behalf of the German Government, as well as other national and international clients (e.g. EU, private enterprises, and foundations). In addition, GIZ is also engaged in the field of professional training around the globe.
With over 30 years of experience implementing projects in the People’s Republic of China, GIZ provides policy advice on various topics and sectors relating to China’s reform process, including: environmental protection, sustainable economic development (especially renewable energies and energy efficiency), sustainable urban development, sustainable transport development, vocational training, law, product safety and consumer protection.
The performance profile of GIZ is continually being adapted to the cooperation needs of both countries – within the framework of the “Comprehensive Sino-German Strategic Partnership” – as well as within the framework of the dynamic changes occurring as a part of Chinese reform policies. In addition, GIZ works as both adviser and service provider at the interface between the economic and political spheres. GIZ is also active in those fields in which German actors possess in-depth profiles and competitive advantages, and where German expertise is in high demand.
Job description
The internship is located in the Cluster “Sino-German Center for Sustainable Development -Together for Global Impact” which was established in 2019. The Cluster bundles all GIZ projects and project activities which are commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aim at engaging with China as global development actor.
The Cluster works mainly in the sectors of sustainable investment in partner countries, economic development, agriculture, import and export, sustainable infrastructure, sustainable timber trade as well as regional economic cooperation and integration:
· China’s development cooperation system and policies
· Sino-German triangular development cooperation
· China’s development related commercial and public activities abroad
· Third market cooperation of Chinese and German companies
· Cooperation with Chinese industry associations on sustainability topics
· Business conduct of Chinese companies abroad including ESG, transparency and sustainability issues.
Within the afore-mentioned sectors, the Cluster implements a variety of capacity building measures such as public-private dialogues, conferences, workshops, trainings, utilizing background research, sector specific guidelines and studies. Outcomes of activities and research from the Cluster are communicated on respective websites and social media platforms, newsletters, policy briefings, or further publications.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Support the preparation, review and editing of project documentation, articles and policy papers for internal and external use
- Targeted research on project relevant topics and editing of information for newsletters and presentations
- Facilitate the preparation and organization of events and activities in China
- Assist in project daily administration work, office management works and electronic archiving of documents
- Translation assignments, and – if necessary – the production of documents and presentations in English and Chinese
Skills & experience
- Master/Bachelor student with strong academic background or previous experience in one of each category: public relations, communication, international relations, politics, economics, finance- or infrastructure-related fields
- Chinese mother tongue, excellent English (written and spoken) is a must, German language skills are a plus
- Experienced with administrative and event organization tasks
- High attention to details and good team player
- Ability to work independently and to comply with deadlines
- Self-starter and passion for international cooperation
Note: Chinese needs to be your native language; only candidates who are enrolled in university in China are eligible for this internship
