Position Overview:
Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is seeking applications for one open position as Instructors for Teaching Physics Labs at its interdisciplinary liberal arts Undergraduate Program (UG). The successful candidate will be supporting course instructions of laboratory sessions in fundamental physics and materials science courses in the UG Division of Natural and Applied Sciences (DNAS). Lab Instructors will receive mentoring in teaching that prepares them well for future career development. This position has an initial appointment period of three years and can be prolonged to a long-term position upon positive evaluation and mutual agreement.
Duke Kunshan University is a partnership of Duke University, Wuhan University, and the Municipality of Kunshan, China. DKU is located in Kunshan, China, about 30 km from Shanghai. DKU offers a series of graduate degree programs and launched its undergraduate degree program in 2018. Our campus provides an innovative, interdisciplinary undergraduate liberal arts experience to a student body that will number 2200 students and 200 faculty, with a student body represented by over 60 countries. The Instructors for Teaching Labs will play an important role in delivering integrated and interdisciplinary teaching for the new UG program. Review of applications will begin in June 2025 and will continue until the positions are filled.

Chair of the Division of Natural and Applied Sciences
Essential Duties:
1. Support lab instructions under the supervision of the course instructors at DKU.
2. Teach the lab within the context of the course, and provide a constant presence in labs.
3. Introduce lab activities when appropriate.
4. Help with lab set up and take down.
5. Ensure the students understand the issues of experimental design, error in measurement, data analysis, and control treatments or conditions.
6. Ensure safe lab practices.
7. Monitor students’ use of lab notebooks.
8. Assist with grading lab notebooks and reports when requested.
9. Assist in guiding undergraduate signature work.
10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & experience
Required Qualifications:
1. Candidates must hold a master’s Degree (Ph.D. is preferred) in physics, materials science, or a relevant discipline. Teaching experience is desirable, as is experience working in labs in an international setting.
2. Willing to work in a multidisciplinary and intercultural environment.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
4. Good organizational skills and knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.
5. Strong communication skills and the ability to work within a team environment.
