Job description
Working with the MMM Creative team, and LLSHZR Project team, the Senior Art Director for LEGOLAND Shenzhen will be responsible for managing and directing the successful creative interpretation of the LEGOLAND Resort product (Theme Park, Water Park & x3 Hotels) from design through to attraction opening, ensuring at each stage the product is approved and delivered to the agreed creative vision, brief, quality, brand ‘DNA’, project budget and schedule.
KEY OBJECTIVES
Creatively ensure the successful finalisation and accurate execution of LEGOLAND Shenzhen ready for opening day.
Proactively drive the finalisation of detailed creative design information for LEGOLAND Shenzhen, delivering product in accordance with the agreed creative vision and briefs.
Work with fellow MMM Creative team, the nominated Project Managers, Design Director, LEGO Merlin Partner team, and external Project Partners & Contractors, to develop & accurately deliver the Theme Park, Water Park and Hotels from design through to completion and opening.
Assist with the resolution of outstanding design/creative information in relation to the LLSHZR, with particular awareness of costs to ensure creative vision is solutions focused and balanced with practical achievability.
Output to consist of design drawings, mark ups, written descriptions, specification documents, reports etc (i.e. self-generated design specifications & data), in addition to the creative art direction of others.
All data to be formally collated for ease of access for other LEGOLAND Resorts. At each stage ensure that the physical content follows the agreed brief, LEGO & LEGOLAND brand guidelines, budget and schedule.
Work with the MMM Creative team and partners to help complete the detailed design & specifications for LEGOLAND Shenzhen Resort and art direct all guest experience aspects through to completion.
Be a supportive line manager for the x3 LLSHZR Art Directors, providing empathetic support and guidance, with a positive solutions-focused attitude. Proactively suggest and obtain agreement regarding alternative & additional design/delivery solutions, including value engineering and RFIs, whilst preserving highest standards of guest experience and creative intent.
Support other design & project team members through proactive & clear communication, feedback and collaboration.
Ensure all creative design is developed & delivered within the parameters of schedule, quality and budget... inc discussions with relevant partners to agree any adjustments & exceptions.
Ensure a wholistic approach to the LLSHZR, with wherever possible design details, finishes, and delivery methods consistent between the Theme Park, Water Park and Hotels.
Ensure all learnings from previous projects & resorts (physical design/delivery and process) are incorporated to prevent mistakes from reoccurring, whilst also improving the guest and operational experience, and brand consistency.
Manage LEGO approvals via LEGO Merlin Partners team, for design and guest experience brand compliance.
Expertise to articulate, communicate & protect the LEGOLAND creative vision to internal & external suppliers and consultant network. Ensure strong communication of the LEGOLAND brand to ensure all project team members & contractors are aware of the guest experience priorities and understand the LEGO brand ‘DNA’.
Ensure detailed design & execution of all aspects of the guest experience is compliant with agreed creative intent and also LEGO and LEGOLAND brand guidelines, (including proportions, scaling, brick and character representation, colours, finish, correct use of LEGO studs, tone of voice, etc).
Develop effective relationships with Project Managers, Design Managers, Operations Team, LEGO Partnership team, as well as internal MMM teams.
Skills & experience
Strong Creative, with proven experience at proactively leading successful projects, teams, and direct reports. In depth knowledge/experience of Hotels, Water Parks, and/or Theme Park Attractions design; including Architecture, Theming, Rides, Storytelling, Internal & External Area development design & delivery experience.
Thorough understanding of and ability to creatively direct a range of suppliers from concept through to delivery; including 3D theming, LEGO models & props, scripts, AV and special effects, visualisers and graphic artists, architects and interior design, ride manufacturers and associated systems, show control, as well as acting and writing talent.
Strong creative designer, capable of self-generating bespoke visual output, sketches, drawings, and supporting text/documents... for both the briefing and recording of information. Whilst the role is primarily about delivering the pre-approved detailed design, there will on occasion be the need for design details and/or alternative creative solutions to be generated to address on site issues.
Experience of working with IPs and delivering to their exacting requirements, and managing accordingly to ensure brand compliance. And in doing so, being trusted to work in accordance with strict confidentially and non disclosure agreements.
Ability to influence at all levels; This role is all about being a team player working across multiple disciplines, within international and local teams, and with the skills to ensure the efficient and accurate interpretation of the designs into the final product and experiences.
Impeccable communication ability, whether with peers or senior directors, and capable of flexing style accordingly.
Must be a personable manager, able to support direct reports, work with the team’s strengths as individuals and a collective, be a mentor where experience needs building up, and generally inspire a can-do positive environment for the project and the team. Language:
Due to Merlin being an English language-based company, and the developments being in China, it is essential for all candidates to have skills in English (in spoken and written forms) and fluent in Chinese (Mandarin).
Due to project timings, preference is for candidates to be already located in China with full right to work.
