Two recommended national standards "Intellectual Property Literature and Information – Basic Terms" and "Intellectual Property Literature and Information – Classification and Code", constituted by the State Intellectual Property Office were approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration and put into practice since June 1, which are the first national standards in IP field in China.

As Chinese IP cause develops, the problems of non-standardized basic terms and non-uniform meaning become prominent, which have influenced the accurate exchange and use of IP literature information.

In addition, the existing literature classification method could not offer an effective classification of IP literature information, which has impacted the processing, handling, exchange and utilization of IP literature information; therefore, it is urgent to constitute corresponding term standard and classification standard on the basis of China's IP practice.

Finally, the SIPO put forward and drafted the two national standards.

It is reported that the Basic Terms includes and standardizes 105 items in IP field and unifies both the terms in Chinese and English, such as general IP terms, patent terms, trademark terms and copyright terms, which is applicable to IP literature and information and other relevant fields.

Classification and Code adopts digital encoding method to work out a classification system based on the characteristics of literature information in IP field, including 5 categories of general introduction, patent, trademark, copyright and other IP rights or related protection and 139 items, applicable to the classification and mark of IP literature and information, but inapplicable to the classification of patent literature and trademark gazettes.
