Shanxi Inspection Trip

Last year European Chamber members ABB China, AstraZeneca, Ericsson, Nokia, PSA Peugeot Citron, Philips, P&G and Siemens donated over RMB 1.2 million to Shanxi Province for the construction and renovation of 8 local primary schools. These primary schools are located in Xinzhou, one of Shanxi’s poorest regions.

To mark the completion of the primary schools and their opening for the new school year, a delegation of 10 representatives from some of these companies led by Yves Boutin, Senior Consultant of the European Chamber's Advisory Council, travelled to Shanxi on 19th September. The visit was organised by the European Chamber and the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) and gave the representatives the chance to ensure that there was an improvement in the local educational infrastructure as an outcome of the donation.

The delegation was received by the vice governor of Shanxi Province Liang Bin, who expressed his sincere appreciation for the donation and commended the companies involved for their charitable actions. During the visit the delegation visited the schools and participated in their opening ceremonies. They were able to see the significant changes made possible from the proceeds of the donation, such as libraries, clean and warm dormitories, sports facilities, bright classrooms and new desks and chairs.

At the event the companies expressed their hopes that the donation will not only help to improve the schools' conditions, but will also arouse the students’ enthusiasm for studying to change their future and the construction of a harmonious society.
