European Chamber launches its 6th European Business in China Position Paper

Beijing, 5th September 2006. The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, the leading exponent of European business interests in China and the Voice of European Business in China, has today launched the sixth edition of the European Business in China Position Paper.

An advance copy of the “2006-2007 European Business in China Position Paper”, the premier annual publication of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China was presented on Monday evening, the 4th, to Minister Bo Xilai of the Ministry of Commerce during a dinner celebrating China’s 5 year WTO Partnership.

President Serge Janssens de Varebeke, of the European Chamber, introduced the new edition of the Position Paper to the press during a Press Conference at the Capital Club in Beijing. In his speech, where he outlined the key messages contained within the new Position Paper, Mr. Janssens de Varebeke stated "China has successfully implemented the majority of WTO commitments on, or ahead, of schedule”, nevertheless, “European companies still face some obstacles in China: "Transparency” and “Intellectual Property Rights” remain the main concerns of doing business in China. The Press Conference was attended by over eighty members of Chinese and international media.

The 2006-2007 Position Paper recognises the continued improvements in China’s evolving business environment while at the same time identifying a number of key concerns that require more dialogue with the relevant authorities both here in China and in Brussels. Over the course of the next few months the Position Paper will be presented to the relevant Chinese authorities as well as the European Commission in Brussels.
