In the past few years, standardisation has come to the forefront of discussions among policy-makers across the world. In China, the standardisation system has been undergoing a major reform since 2015. In October 2021 Chinese authorities published the National Standardisation Outline which sets the basis for the direction of China’s standardisation strategy until 2035. In December 2022 policy-makers also published the 14th Five-Year Plan for Standardisation, which provides more detailed guidance for the next five years. At the same time, the European Union (EU) has also been in the process of finetuning its own approach to standards-setting, and in February 2022 it published its own standardisation strategy, which aims – among other things, to establish priority areas in standardisation, improve the governance and integrity of the European standardisation system, effectively support innovation, bolster European leadership in global standardisation, and strengthen the training of standardisation experts.
Albeit the role of government in the European and Chinese standardisation systems is markedly different, the private sector remains an important component of standardisation activities both in the EU and in China. Understanding the direction EU and Chinese policy-makers plan to take in their respective approaches to standardisation can help European businesses develop strategies that can contribute to improving their access and operating conditions in China’s standardisation framework and maintaining their overall competitiveness in the Chinese market. Thus, the European Chamber is pleased to invite you to our upcoming closed-door Working Group meeting, where Ms Sophie Mueller, Head of Unit for Standardisation at DG GROW, and Ms Betty Xu, Director at SESEC, will provide an overview of the EU’s and China’s standardisation strategies. The meeting will take place on the 24th May from 15:30 to 17:00 online via Zoom.
