Closing off 2020, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China will celebrate its 20th Anniversary. Founded in 2000, the initial goal of the European Chamber was to establish a common voice for the various business sectors of the European Union and European businesses operating in China. This is still our raison d’être today.
For the past 20 years, the European Chamber has been a guide for European businesses to develop their presence in China, while also providing both Chinese and European authorities with constructive policy recommendations. We will continue to be your indefatigable advocate now and well into the future.
In recognition of the many accomplishments and successes over the past two decades, the European Chamber will host a celebration event in Shenzhen on 25 November.
The first half will be a conference discussing the challenges and opportunities for European companies operating here, as China’s new digital infrastructure initiative meets a de-globalised world.
A ceremony and buffet dinner will be held following the conference for you to enjoy with European Chamber members and South China business community.

Mr. George Lau
George Lau, General Manager QHSE Greater China, is responsible for Brand Protection at TÜV Rheinland, where he has worked for 14 years.
Since 2013, Lau has held seminars for authorities, e.g. SAMR (State Administration of Market Regulation), DRC (Development and Reform Commission), Shanghai Institute of Administrative Law, Hamburg Business Development Corporation, and companies e.g. Google, Alibaba, Huawei, Lenovo regarding EU certification regulations & risk management, receiving unanimous recognition.
Previously, Lau worked as an analyst for ZTE Corporation. As result of his performance regarding African market development – fulfilling Chinese central government’s mission – he was promoted directly to Assistant to the CEO.
Since 2004, Lau has been studying the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese-foreign cultural differences, socialism with Chinese characteristics etc., to explore strategies of foreign companies in China. He believes that such knowledge is indispensable for multinationals developing in China.
Lau is a German Chinese who immigrated to Germany at the age of 5. He is fluent in German, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, French and graduated from Konstanz University with magister juris in 2003.
Mr. Jörg Wuttke
Jörg Wuttke is Vice President and Chief Representative of BASF China, based in Beijing. Since joining BASF in 1997, Mr. Wuttke has been responsible for helping guide the company’s investment strategies for China, negotiation of large projects and government relations.
Previous to joining BASF, Mr. Wuttke worked with ABB for 11 years; in fact his first professional encounter with China was in 1988 as the Finance and Administration Manager of ABB Beijing. In 1990, he returned to Germany as Sales Manager of ABB Power Plants Division, responsible for gas turbine sales to Africa and Russia. In 1993, he became Chief Representative ABB China in Shanghai and in 1994 moved to the President's Office of ABB China in Beijing, where he was responsible for the development and financing of large projects.
From 2001 to 2004 Mr. Wuttke was the Chairman of the German Chamber of Commerce in China. From 2007 to 2010, 2014 to 2017, and since May 2019 again he is the President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China
From 2011 to 2019, Mr. Wuttke was Chairman of the BIAC China Task Force of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD (BIAC), a Paris based body of major business associations that lobbies the OECD.
From 2013 to 2016, and again since 2019 Mr. Wuttke is Vice Chairman of the CPCIF International Cooperation Committee, a group representing Multinational Companies in China’s Chemical Association.
Since its establishment in 2013, Mr. Wuttke is member of the Advisory Board of Germany’s foremost Think Tank on China, Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), in Berlin.
In January 2019 Mr. Wuttke joined the International Board of the Stars Foundation, in Switzerland. stars - for Leaders of the Next Generation.
Mr. Gianluca Giorgi
Mr. Gianluca Giorgi is the Vice Chair of the European Chamber South China Chapter and the CEO of Shenzhen ES Automation Consulting Ltd which focuses on strategic mentors in Robotics and Automation projects. As a Business Innovation and Application Certified Expert in MIT Sloan Blockchain Technologies, he also holds a post as the member of the International Blockchain Council and member in the Information Technology Working Group.
Mr. Omar Khan
Omar Khan is a reporter for China Global Television Network (CGTN) and is based in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Previously in Beijing, Mr. Khan worked as an editor in the news department, before moving to the domestic reporting team.
Mr. Khan has reported in nearly 20 provinces and regions across China, covering topics ranging from technology, business, culture, and human interest stories. He’s conducted interviews with high-level company representatives from firms like Huawei, Tencent, and Alibaba. He’s also covered the stories of leaders in the foreign business community and former diplomats.
Mr. Khan has spent 7 years in China, having studied Mandarin Chinese in Guangzhou, before spending a year at consulting firm Dezan Shira & Associates. Mr. Khan graduated from King’s College London with an MSc in China Globalisation Studies in London, UK, and a BA in Legal Studies from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He speaks fluent English, intermediate French and Chinese, and basic Polish.
Mr. Wilson Peng
Since 1982, Mr. Wilson Peng has built his working experience from Wuhan Iron and Steel Corp., Yangtze Optical Fiber and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company, and ZEISS. His expertise covers four industries and three different types of corporates (State Owned Enterprise, Joint-Venture, and Sole Proprietorship), which empowers Mr. Wilson Peng with a deep and thorough understanding of market dynamics, products, and branding in China. His unique insights, proven commercial success, and international experiences benefit from his various positions from engineer, senior engineer, Plant Manager to Managing Director of China.
During the past 36 years, especially with 24 years at ZEISS, Mr. Wilson Peng has developed extensive experience and insights in lean operation, culture and mindset cultivation, and established ZEISS Guangzhou as one of the three leading businesses in ZEISS Vision globally. Led by Mr. Wilson Peng, ZEISS group vision manufacturing facilities in China have grown from a single manufacturing sites to a sustainable vision care eco-system that includes design, R&D, manufacturing, LEAN, sales, logistics, and customer service centers, and made Guangzhou one of the first vision care eco-systems with high level of entirety, colocation and centralization, and advanced technology. With Mr. Wilson Peng’s effort, ZEISS has transformed its 174 years of history to a premium brand in vision care in China through digital transformation, omni-channels, and enabling customer success, with many highlighted stories in delighting customers.
Mr. Vivian Desmonts
With 20 years of experience in Chinese law and practice, Vivian Desmonts advises European groups and SMEs on their new projects and daily operations in mainland China.
He has broad expertise in M&A and development of Foreign Direct Investments in China, including corporate governance (WFOE and JV), international trade, manufacturing and distribution, employment law and immigration, as well as in international taxation and customs law.
His mixed French and Chinese origins help to bridge the cultural and legal differences in cross-border transactions. He is fluent in English, French, Mandarin and Cantonese and has worked with international clients from all sectors.
Vivian is a French attorney at law admitted to the Paris bar, registered foreign lawyer with the Guangdong Bureau of Justice, appointed legal counsel by the French Consulate in Guangzhou and arbitrator at the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. He is also an active member of the European Chamber and has served as Board member in South China for several years.
Mr. Denis Bastieri
30 years expertise in low-power and high-performance computing as well as designing and building detectors. He is a professor at the University of Padova, Italy and at Guangzhou University. He supervised a dozen of Chinese PhD students in Italy and several joint programs between Italy and China, mainly in the field of advanced data analysis and high-energy astrophysics. In addition, he supervised the first Master thesis on Bitcoin in 2009-10 and since then he has been active in the field of blockchains, with particular interest in data integrity and security. Currently he is teaching blockchain in a joint university program organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. Thomson Reuters most cited researcher (top 1% in the world).
Mrs. Francine Hadjisotiriou
Francine Hadjisotiriou is the General Manager of the European Chamber South China Chapter where she manages the Guangzhou and Shenzhen office operations.
She has 25 years’ experience in B to B services of which 20 spent in Asia. After working in Tokyo, Japan, for more than 3 years in the credit-insurance company Coface Japan, she joined the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and established the Nanjing Chapter in early 2004. She took over the newly established South China Chapter at the end of 2006.
The South China Chapter has about 300 corporate members.
