Since it became a municipality under the direct control of the Central Government in 1997, Chongqing has seen an unparalleled development and growth. The annual GDP growth consistently outpaced the national average. Even in 2012, the growth stood still at a very high level of 13.6 per cent year-on-year and was the second highest in China. Chongqing continues to play a major role for the development in China’s western region and hosts about 230 of the global Fortune 500 companies within the municipality.

Reflecting the growing importance of Chongqing, the regional organisation of the European Chamber was renamed in 2012 to “Southwest Chapter” and covers particularly Chongqing and Sichuan. Meanwhile, Chongqing’s office of the European Chamber is fully operational, and the Chamber offers an increased number of valuable events, as well as enhanced services to its members and other interested parties. Currently, the Southwest Chapter has 30 members in Chongqing.
