Most of us know about the market access barriers faced by foreign firms entering the Chinese market but as Chinese firms 'go global', what about the barriers facing the Chinese companies that venture abroad? From 2002 to 2009, China’s ODI grew by 54.4% annually and is expected to reached $100 billion by 2015. As China invests outward, which European countries will attract the most Chinese investment?
Geopolitics or just globalization?
What role does the Chinese government play in Chinese companies investing abroad? Are their decisions influenced by commercial considerations alone? And many suspect that Chinese companies that invest in Europe are supported by Chinese state funds, reducing their costs yet European companies that invest in China do not enjoy the same support.
What is China's outbound investment strategy? Is there a Siege on Europe? Chinese authorities targeting eastern Europe and Turkey, slowly surrounding Europe and its logistical routes – competing with western Europe in the emerging eastern European Markets. What sectors does China target and why The ‘Boomerang effect’: Is Europe selling it’s remaining Crown Jewels?
As foreign investment deals increasingly involve a transfer of technology, is there a risk that Chinese companies will or have already used this new found technology and to be even more competitive Europe? Are we throwing away our competitive advantage for short term gain in profit?
Can China save European Companies- Is Chinese investment a white knight for ailing European firms? Recently, both France and the UK have received an investment boost from China. What effect have Chinese firms had on the flagging European Economy? Will the experience of Chinese companies abroad have an impact on Chinese policy towards foreign companies in China? China may be tempted to use investment policy to protect its national champions, yet as Chinese companies go global and invest abroad, they will encounter barriers abroad and may encourage Chinese authorities to liberalize investment policy at home.
