The Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) is a clean energy-dominant, electric-centric modern energy system that is globally interconnected, jointly constructed and mutually beneficial to all. It is an important platform for the large-scale development, transmission and consumption of clean energy resources worldwide. In essence, GEI is “Smart Grid + UHV Grid + Clean Energy”.
On September 26, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed discussions on establishing Global Energy Interconnection, to facilitate efforts to meet global power demand with clean and green alternatives at the UN Sustainable Development Summit. At the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation on May 14, 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for collective action “to seize opportunities presented by the new round of change in energy mix and the revolution in energy technologies to develop Global Energy Interconnection and achieve green and low-carbon development”. In December 2019 during the COP25, in UN’s high-level side event, Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation (GEIDCO) was invited to make a keynote speech. GEIDCO stressed that GEI offers a fundamental solution for promoting world climate governance and sustainable development, and also an important platform for promoting large scale development, allocation and consumption of clean energy worldwide.
The European Chamber will invite Mr Xu Ming, deputy director general of GEIDCO to introduce the organisation’s projects, including:

全球能源互联网是清洁主导、电为中心、互联互通、共建共享的现代能源体系，是清洁能源在全球范围大规模开发、输送、使用的重要平台，实质就是“智能电网+特高压电网+清洁能源”。
2015年9月26日，中国国家主席习近平在联合国发展峰会上发表重要讲话，倡议探讨构建全球能源互联网，推动以清洁和绿色方式满足全球电力需求。2017年5月14日，中国国家主席习近平在“一带一路”国际合作高峰论坛上强调，要抓住新一轮能源结构调整和能源技术变革趋势，建设全球能源互联网，实现绿色低碳发展。
2019年12月，联合国第25届气候变化大会（COP25）在西班牙马德里举行。合作组织代表在高级别边会上表示，全球能源互联网是应用特高压输电、智能电网等先进技术，推动全球清洁能源大规模开发、配置和使用的重要平台。构建全球能源互联网，将落实碳减排目标，提高减排经济性，创新机制与模式，对于推动世界能源转型、落实《巴黎协定》、实现可持续发展具有重大意义。
