Dear Partners and Stakeholders,
The 2018 Central Economic Work Conference – the annual meeting where China leaders discuss the economic outcomes of the year and set the direction of economic policy – took place last December. Its tone, markedly more pessimistic than last year’s, and the policy direction outlined there were much commented by China watchers over the world.
Meanwhile, in the global arena the world is getting ready for the 2019 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, the topic of which (Globalisation 4.0) is especially relevant in the wake of increased protectionism and fragmentation experienced in a number of countries. Where will China position itself during the meeting? How does this reflect both its global economic agenda and its 2019 economic outlook?
The EU SME Centre and the European Chamber are thus delighted to invite you to join our next Policy Meeting on the topic of globalisation, with Ms. Philippa Jones, Managing Director at China Policy, and Mr. Mike Denison, Director of Public Affairs at North Head, as speakers. The event will take place on the 29th January from 15:30 to 17:30 at Four Seasons Beijing. The meeting will be held under Chatham House rules.

About the speakers
Philippa Jones
A regulatory and trade policy specialist, Philippa set up China Policy following a career in research and the public sector. First studying in Beijing in 1975, she has now worked in China-related research and policy development for over thirty years.
From 2004-9 Philippa was senior advisor at the EU-China Trade Project (EUCTP), the EU’s largest trade-related technical assistance program worldwide. At the EUCTP Philippa led the agriculture, quarantine, quality and standards programs. Responsible for standards issues across all sectors, Philippa’s own focus was on risk and safety.
Prior to joining the EUCTP Philippa was a member of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. From 1999-2003 she served as trade policy specialist at Beijing’s Australian Embassy, a time of regulatory watershed in China. Following accession to the WTO in 2001, China embarked upon a major program of economic and legal reform that continues today.
Philippa holds an honours degree in Chinese and economics from the University of Oxford.
Mike Denison
Mike is the director of the Public Affairs practice at North Head, a strategic communications consultancy based in Beijing. He oversees the team managing a series of client accounts across the consumer goods, manufacturing, technology, and finance sectors.
Mike has a strong research and analytics background. Before joining North Head, Mike was based in East Africa providing research for multinational organisations engaged in “Belt and Road” programmes. His professional experience in China and Africa includes financial services, aviation, logistics, security, and development consultancy. His research and analysis has focused on political environments, market trends, policy and regulatory developments, and their impact on business across Asia and Africa. Mike studied at Peking University, the London School of Economics, and the University of Oxford.
