Many companies are moving from ad hoc social responsibility programs to more integrated approaches by committing to business models that demand collaboration and smart risk-taking from every supplier in the value chain. While the transition to create a socially and environmentally responsible ecosystem can be challenging, it also presents the nation an opportunity to enable new forms of innovation to take hold.
The CEO Talk initiative shows that companies do not only care about environmental and social contribution of its own, but also of the contribution of their stakeholders. Following previous CEO talks on strategies in sustainability along the value chain, the 3rd talk will focus on corporate talent strategy as “The Force” for innovation and better fulfillment of social responsibilities.
As a pioneer to drive technology innovation and sustainability in the industry, the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) has strategized its talents empowerment approach with both internal Employee Scholar Program (ESP) that supports its employee’s life-long learning, and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program that inspire the future generation of scientists, engineers and change makers.
The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Mr. Xiaofan HOU, China Region General Manager of United Technologies Corporations (UTC) Aerospace Systems, as he discusses the visions and practices of talents empowerment in the aerospace industry. UTC will go through what innovation will bring to the sustainability map for China and the world, as well to recall the SDG calls.

Background :
STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. The rise of a great power always goes with the advancement in manufacturing. The recently released Made in China 2015 has indicated a trend of rapid transformation from ‘Made in China’ to ‘Intelligent manufacturing in China’, which also sets the criteria for future talents.
By 2018, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields will demand an estimated 7.8 million workers worldwide.
UTC supports lifelong learning for all employees. In China, its Employee Scholar Program has invested more than USD 14 million to help employees earn 1,200 degrees. In addition, UTC inspires students to embrace science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), sponsoring primary school to university-level programs that spark students’ interest and inspire innovation. In the past year, UTC-sponsored 5th grade curriculum has reached 3 million students in 48 states.
March 20, 2015. UTC announced a new charitable partnership with the CFFPD, the launch of the STEM Education Program in China. The program will focus on encouraging Chinese youth’s interest in pursuing STEM related courses and careers. Presently, the biggest hurdle in fulfilling this need is a lack of access to quality STEM learning opportunities.
In 2016, UTC celebrates its 20th anniversary of ESP. And to extend the impact of its STEM efforts in China, during October 21-23, UTC and its non-profit associates in China face the challenge head-on at the first annual STEM EXPO, aiming to establish a cross-sector collaboration platform to promote STEM education in China, while fostering the communication and exchanges between professionals from educational institution, NGOs and business sectors.
