October 23rd, 2024, the European Chamber Nanjing Chapter held the European Business in China-Position Paper 2024/2025 and Business Confidence Survey 2024 in Tietoevry Nanjing Office. This event gathered around 70 attendees from our members and partners.
During the exclusive meeting with our local members, the chamber's president Jens Eskelund firstly shared the achievement during his visit in Brussels with the EU Stakeholders in the beginning of this month. Then he shared his insights in current trends and challenge when doing business in China. There is a significant deterioration in the outlook on profitability for European companies in China and the challenges include market access issues, regulatory barriers, a politicized business environment, and an emphasis on national security and self-reliance. Therefore, our members should take actions to fit the situation.
Then the launch event of Position Paper 2024/2025 and Business Confidence Survey 2024 followed. President Jens Eskelund shared the presentation and mentioned that there is increasing Business Challenges in China with declined Business Confidence. He emphasized that despite a commitment to market reforms, there has been a lack of follow-through on reform pledges, leading to "promise fatigue" among European businesses. The paper calls for urgent action to restore foreign investor confidence, including improvements in market access, procurement, HR and business travel, digital and cyber issues, green energy access, IPR, and investment promotion and facilitation. Dr Andreas Risch, Board Chair of the Nanjing Chapter launched the result of the Business Confidence Survey 2024.
After the meeting session, all the guests moved to the outdoor garden for the business networking with refreshments and music for a unforgettable evening.
