European Chamber Meeting with CCIEE Executive Vice Chairman Zhang Xiaoqiang

On 13th December, European Chamber President Jörg Wuttke led a delegation to meet with Zhang Xiaoqiang, executive vice chair of the China Centre for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE).

President Wuttke presented to Executive Vice Chair Zhang the European Business in China Position Paper 2021/2022 and the recently published report The Shape of Things to Come: The Race to Control Technical Standardisation. Executive Vice Chair Zhang acknowledged the European Chamber's work and the recommendations made in the Position Paper. He said many of these recommendations are in line with the government’s work priorities set forth for the coming year during the 2021 Central Economic Work Conference.

The two parties had an open and honest discussion on the key challenges faced by European businesses in China, including technical standardisation, concerns over dual circulation, supply chain vulnerability, and risks of decoupling and the politicisation of business, among others.

Executive Vice Chair Zhang stressed that China’s reform and opening has its own model and path to follow, but China’s door will continue to open and the country will not become self-sufficient. He said China is more than willing to enhance exchange and cooperation with foreign companies on green energy, decarbonisation, standard setting and other important topics.
