“Will Perform Better Role as Think-tank Platform and Deepen Cooperation with Industrial Sector”: CCIEE Vice Chair and CEO Zhang Xiaoqiang hosts European Chamber delegation

On 13th November, European Chamber Vice President (VP) Charlotte Roule led a delegation to the China Centre for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) to meet with its Vice Chair (VC) and CEO Zhang Xiaoqiang. The Chamber delegation included representatives from the Energy, Environment and Banking and Securities working groups, Quality and Safety Services Sub-working Group, Paediatric Nutrition Desk and Government Affairs Forum.

Many topics were touched upon in the discussions, including; clean energy mix; how testing, inspection and certification (TIC) supports China’s Belt and Road Initiative; the circular economy; formalising plastic recycling; third-party certification recognition; legislation covering bankruptcy and green financing; infant formula powder recipe registration; and innovative technology support (such as air traffic control technology). The two sides also established a mechanism for frequent communication. VC Zhang said he expected the CCIEE as a national think-tank to perform a better role as a platform to deepen cooperation between the government and industries.

VP Roule highlighted the importance of reform in stated-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the need for competitive neutrality, which the Chamber considers as key to creating a level playing-field for both SOEs and private companies, thus ultimately contributing to economic development in China. As the meeting drew to a close, VP Roule presented the European Business in China Position Paper 2019/2020, Business Confidence Survey 2019 and The Digital Hand: How China’s Corporate Social Credit System Conditions Market Actors to VC Zhang, and said she expected more frequent exchanges between the two sides in the near future.
