On 17th September, the European Chamber South China Chapter brought together at its Shenzhen offices a team of healthcare experts and life science professionals to meet with the Swedish ambassador and delegation. The roundtable discussion focussed on the state of healthcare and its future development in Guangdong province. The event also provided a platform for Chinese and European authorities to share their personal and professional experience in Guangdong’s healthcare sector. From market access to labour retention, to the effects of the US-China trade war and ramifications of manufacturing intellectual property in Guangdong, the ambassador’s and the delegation’s pointed questions drew a first-hand picture of the local industry’s ins-and-outs for the Swedish surveyors.

A resounding message of hope for the Greater Bay Area initiative—and the potential benefits it could bring to healthcare and life science stakeholders—echoed throughout the discussion. However, this optimism was often met with comments that reminded participants to remain realistic, practical, and even skeptical. Experts advised all attendees to remain cautious and informed, emphasising that this Greater Bay Area remains just a plan, and only through implementation will the results it has in store for manufacturing, healthcare, life science, and the future of Guangdong be seen.
