This year’s annual sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPCC), known as the Lianghui, concluded on 15th March. There were many significant outcomes: the ‘new normal’ of slower economic growth is set to prevail, with GDP growth set at seven per cent;President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption drive will remain in high gear; environmental protection will be tightened; and deepening of reforms are set to take place in different sectors. These were all anticipated, but what surprises emerged?
For the next edition of Capital Beat, the European Chamber has confirmed knowledgeable and influential political experts to discuss this high-level gathering:
Scott Kronick, President and CEO of Ogilvy Public Relations, Asia Pacific, will provide insights on what the Lianghui means to business and how some companies are using this in how they operate their businesses in China;
Dr Zhang Jian, Associate Professor, Peking University’s School of Government, will provide a unique perspective on discussion of Xi's midterm success and crises, given that the president of PRC, being a nominal head of state, usually does not have a major role in the Lianghui, which used to be the show of the premiers. President Xi most obviously reversed the "tradition" in this year's session of Lianghui;
Paul Haenle, Director of the Carnegie–Tsinghua Center will provide insights on and analysis of the external/foreign policy components of the NPC.
This event will be of significant use to decision makers and key executives that need a deeper understanding of the implications of the Lianghui and how it will impact their businesses and futures in China.
