Driven by high disposable incomes, food safety concerns, and rapid growth in online shopping, the rapidly growing Chinese F&B market has created many opportunities for global food producers aiming to expand their business in China. The official statistics shows that in 2014, imports were valued at EUR 42 billion with 35 million tons of imported food being inspected and quarantined in China. F&B imports from the EU alone were worth EUR 8.2 billion, with market growth of more than 20 per cent expected for organic food over the next few years.
Although the Chinese F&B market sees a bright future, the adoption of the new Food Safety Law, which took effective on October 1, 2015, has provided the regulatory framework for food import and export. The new law will shape the operations of traditional and online F&B operators in China, and all other players involved in import and export activities. Chapter 6, Food Import and Export, has specified roles of relevant food authorities in China with an emphasis on AQSIQ's responsibility in food safety regulation on food imports and exports.
The European Chamber Shanghai Office is pleased to have officials of Food Safety Supervision Division of the Shanghai CIQ, to talk to the members about the latest development of requirements of adjusted supervision on imported food. The officials will also share information on implementing rules for imported food, a document that is currently under review and expected to be published soon by the AQSIQ.
