As Britain prepares itself for the historic June 23 referendum on its membership of the European Union, another player has entered the debate: China. With Chinese businesses and the government now investing in big, lucrative projects in Britain, they’re clearly worried about the economic implications of Brexit. In recent weeks, Chinese officials and business leaders alike have become more vocal in their support for European unity (and, though they haven’t said it explicitly, for the “stay” campaign).
There are crucial reasons why Beijing fears a potential Brexit and would prefer the UK to remain inside the EU. The view that Britain is China’s “best partner in the West – a gateway to Europe” has credence as UK’s continued EU membership could help China in dealing with trade disputes between Beijing and Brussels, and in a slowing Chinese economy, market access to the European Union remains vital as ever.
Both the UK and China believe they have entered a “golden era” of their bilateral partnership with an unprecedented growth in trade and investments. Yet the uncertainty over the UK’s continued membership of the EU is casting a shadow over the relationship. From the perspective of Beijing, only a partnership with London that is firmly rooted in the European Union can allow China to play a greater role in the international arena in this age of turbulence.
The European Chamber is delighted to invite Mr. David Gosset, director of the Academia Sinica Europaea at CEIBS and Mr. Jens Ewert, partner at Deloitte China as they discuss the nearing Brexit referandum and its implications to Europe and China.
