China's strategic importance for European companies increases, yet stalled regulatory reform and rising costs impact both the development of business and the Chinese economy. This annual survey provides insight into European business perception of China's commercial environment, examining developments, improvements and areas of concern.

Highlights from the 2012 survey include:

  • Revenue from Chinese operations comprises more than 10% of worldwide revenue for half of respondent companies, representing an increase of 50% from 2009.
  • 64%of European companies reported EBIT growth over the last year in China.
  • Due to market access and regulatory barriers, 48% of European companies report missing out on business opportunities.
  • 22% of respondents are considering shifting investment from China to other markets.

This survey compiled input from over 550 European Chamber member companies and was produced in partnership with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.
