Topic: Open city - new programs and functions for a CBD development in Shenzhen, determined by collective spaces
Case: International Competition Super Bay City Shenzhen, March - May 2014
For the international competition of a CBD in Shenzhen, U&A Studio with JMAU Architects developed a new building typology, which gives an iconic and recognizable feature and transforms the south western city area into a new metropolitan waterfront.
In our search for a 24 / 7 business economy, we developed a hyper building construction, a building ensemble of towers to create vertical communities. Collective spaces like squares, parks, lobbies and loggias are organized in the third dimension.
The result is a mixed-use building environment with program combinations, creating synergy to inhabit the space vertically. To keep people on higher levels, public attractions and exclusive communal spaces provide a public network in the 3rd dimension, including commercial spaces. Skywalks, organized around a huge green three-dimensional park will link the different building plots.
Robert ten Elsen is team leader of U&A Studio, as part of the Dongbei institute (CNADRI) in Shenyang. His professional background is urban and landscape design, with a Master Degree in Urbanism. From 2010, he is participating in a range of landscape and urban design projects in China, mainly in Shenyang.
