SAP: Ensure compliance to lead the way in China

Every day, many businesses are facing data security threats, and news about system hacking, service disruption, and personal data theft is now commonplace. Meanwhile, more and more enterprises moving to the cloud will further exacerbate the security and compliance issues of IT systems. In the wake of cloud migration, traditional network boundary will become blurred, and the cloud platform itself will bring some uncertainties, both adding to the challenges enterprises facing. In view of this, different countries/regions have put forward higher requirements upon relevant enterprises for data control and protection.

For example, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which officially came into force in May 2018, has set up a new benchmark for data security and privacy protection among enterprises. It not only applies to companies located within the EU, but also companies in other countries and regions as long as they deal with EU companies or individuals, or store and process personal data of EU residents. Failure to comply with GDPR will lead to severe penalties and reputational damage.

Going Overseas and Taking Root: Localization is Vital to Your Business

Governments are carrying out a series of security policies, which is not only to help enterprises reduce safety risks, but also reflects demand for safety at macro level. With the in-depth implementation of the policy of "bringing in and going out", a growing number of Chinese companies are expanding into global market, while many multinational companies are entering into China. For any company, no matter where their business is located, ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations is first priority.

Take foreign companies in China as an example, according to The Cyber Security Law of the People's Republic of China, enterprises must store and process personal information domestically within China to ensure that no data will cross the border. This poses a huge challenge to relevant enterprises in finding the right IT products and technologies, especially cloud service platforms. Therefore, enterprises must choose solutions that not only meet their needs but also align and interact well with their systems deployed in other parts of the world, while ensuring full compliance.

It is necessary for enterprises to design and implement a security system that can meet all their needs from the very beginning, and use such a system to determine all the contents that need to be protected, so that they can provide essential protection in implementing the control system. However, an optimal data security strategy means that all relevant requirements be met in both security and compliance aspects. Enterprises that meet compliance requirements but do not have a sound security mechanism can hardly resist security attacks or disruptive events; companies that boast powerful security mechanisms, but lack compliance controls will also miss out on important safety or risk factors. After all, security and compliance complement each other, and neither is dispensable.

Given that, the overriding concern for companies is: how to strike a better balance between compliance management and security technologies?
