Secretary General Joins Roundtable Dialogue on WTO Modernisation

European Chamber Secretary General Adam Dunnett participated in a roundtable on WTO modernization on 23rd August jointly hosted by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and University of International Business and Economics WTO Institute.  Secretary General Dunnett stated that the WTO has brought more benefits to the world’s economic development than any other multilateral organisation; however, WTO’s reputation has been affected by its slow progress over the last decade. Regarding the current trade tensions between the US and China, and the EU and China, he noted that for European companies in China, concerns about China’s subsidies, transparency and intellectual property rights protection are not new issues. He said although Beijing had made some progress in opening its markets, such opening has not kept pace with China’s overall economic growth and impact. Every country may have its own development path, but there is a tipping point comes when it starts to affects other economies negatively, he said.
