Chamber Discusses Free Trade and China’s Business Environment with Japan’s METI and Embassy

On 31st July, Adam Dunnett, secretary general of the European Chamber, met with Director General Takehiko Matsuo from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to discuss the foreign business environment in China. Adam presented the findings from the Chamber’s recent publication 18 Month’s Since Davos How China’s Vision Became a Reform Imperative. They also discussed potential reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO),  the need for improved rule-making, current enforcement of existing rules and principles, and the recent challenges to appointing new members to the WTO’s appellate body.

Mr Dunnett congratulated the Japanese Government on signing a free trade agreement with the European Union, which has paved the way for the eventual elimination of 99 per cent of all tariffs on traded goods between the European Union (EU) and Japan. Mr Dunnett expressed hope that this would encourage China and the EU to make further advances on negotiating an EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment.
